Hartland Cafe great for a healthy start
Ahhhh. The days are getting longer, with the longest day just about a month away. For me this means more activity and eating earlier in the day. Breakfast is a larger meal for me this time of year, and when I had an out-of-town guest visit recently I went to the place I consider to be one of the best breakfast spots (during the week), Hartland Cafe. While you’re welcome to order from a breakfast menu, Hartland Cafe offers a unique and complete breakfast buffet as well. This includes hot foods like sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, tater tots, grits, biscuits and gravy, French toast and cream of wheat. Or you can enjoy a bakery style breakfast with muffins from two continents (crispy English or mini American), toast, cold cereals and a plethora of fruits - again brought to you by the warmer weather and those extended days. In addition to all that great food previously prepared and ready to eat as soon as you arrive, you can have an omelet or Belgian waffle prepared to order. My dining companion and I both ordered omelets - hers an egg white only omelet with onions, green peppers and cheese, and mine an omelet with broccoli, cheese and green peppers. Both were delicious. A wonderful balance of ingredients and eggs perfectly prepared were both moist and flavorful. The broccoli bits were as finely chopped as the green peppers and grated cheese so that nothing overwhelmed and all blended together for a healthy morning start. Once we finished our omelets we spied and coveted a monstrous, crispy Belgian waffle at the table next to us. We were eating healthy though, which you can definitely do at the Hartland Cafe, so I’ll save the idea of the waffle for mid-winter when I usually decide to give in to my carb cravings. I will say, we arrived just about an hour before the buffet was set to close, which is three hours after it opened, and while there was still an abundance of food, some of it had sat a bit too long - like the French toast. The cafe was quiet, with only one other table when we arrived, but was almost full by the time we left (semi-late, vacationing sleepers I’m guessing who didn’t want to miss these plentiful breakfast treats). If you go early, I would suggest diving into every buffet treat. If you go late, as we did, be discerning about what you choose on the buffet and then order an omelet, waffle or whatever they are offering ready-made that day and you’ll be sure to garner the quality breakfast Hartland Cafe has to offer. — Our anonymous food reviewer gives new restaurants a six-week grace period before reviewing.
